Vodafone to Invest $1.8 Billion in Indian Network Expansion

British mobile phone giant, Vodafone Group, is set to spend approximately US$1.8 billion to expand its wireless networks in India, the Economic Times reported over the weekend.

Vodafone is getting ready to award a series of valuable contracts to networking equipment giants, Nokia Siemens Networks, Ericsson, and Motorola, the paper reported, citing sources close to the contract negotiations.

The wireless giant’s Indian unit, Vodafone Essar, are expected to discuss and finalize the contracts at a board meeting next month.

Officials with the company have not commented on the reports, but Vodafone CEO, Arun Sarin, said in June that the company would invest US$2 billion this year to expand its operations in India, the world’s fastest growing wireless market.
